Barrette's Small Engines Inc. - SmallEngines.ca FAQ's

How do I remove a foreign object out of my snow thrower?

Although the Operators Manual cautions the operator to inspect and remove foreign objects from the area to be cleared; occasionally a foreign object may enter the auger and prohibit the unit from functioning. The most common types of these foreign objects are: newspapers, door mats, pet leashes/chains, rope, hoses and rocks.

If a foreign object becomes caught in the snow thrower, the first thing the operator should do is IMMEDIATELY SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN.

NOTE: These instructions are prepared for use by trained technicians who are experienced in the service and repair of equipment of the kind described in this publication, and are not intended for use by untrained or inexperienced individuals. Such individuals should seek the assistance of an authorized service center.

CAUTION: Before performing maintenance on any unit, always disconnect and ground the spark plug wire.

Commonly, newspapers may get caught in the auger or impeller assembly. Newspapers can be soaked with large quantities of warm soapy water. This will help to soften and loosen the paper for removal. Door mats, rope and other fibrous material may be cut away in sections using a pair of heavy shears. Pet chains may be able to be removed using bolt cutters. Rocks and stones may be freed by gently prying them loose.

If these suggestions do not free a certain object from the snow thrower, dis-assembly of some or all of the affected components of the unit may be required. Please check the illustrated parts list, service manual or contact us by e-mail technicalsupport@smallengines.ca and a customer service representative will be glad to help.
