Barrette's Small Engines Inc. - SmallEngines.ca FAQ's

What is the actual cutting height at each height setting?

The general cutting range on most mowers is from approximately 1 1/2" to 3 1/2". We have built many models and styles over the years. There is no set standard to determine exactly what the blade height will be for every model.

Variations such as the wheel size, blade style, engine crankshaft design and adjustment components must be considered when determining the cutting height settings.

Each customer will need to determine optimum cutting heights for their lawn. Seasonal climate and grass species will affect these recommendations. For more information of grass species and recommended cutting heights, please consult a grass seed company, library or lawn care professional. Although conditions vary greatly, most customers will adjust to the best suited cutting height as seasonal conditions change.

Here are some helpful instructions on "How to measure the actual cutting height" for walk-behind mowers:

CAUTION: Before performing any service always disconnect and properly ground the engine spark plug wire

a) With the mower off and the spark plug wire disconnected, place the mower on a hard level surface such as a concrete driveway.

b) Raise all the adjusters so that the deck is at the highest cutting position.

c) Measure this height setting from the blade tip and the ground.

Service Tip -Using a small piece of wood (such as an ice cream stick), stand it vertically underneath the cutting deck and use the blade tip to mark the wood, measure the distance from the mark to the end of the wood.

d) Lower all the adjusters to the next setting and repeat the measurement process.

e) Continue this process until each of the height settings are determined.

f) Record these measurements for future reference.

Operator Tip*- Once the ideal height settings for a particular lawn type is determined, operators may want to consider marking these particular lawns ideal cut height settings on the height adjusters using a paint pen or permanent marker for future reference.
