Barrette's Small Engines Inc. - SmallEngines.ca FAQ's

Why does the engine have more than one oil fill/drain location?

CAUTION: Before performing maintenance on anyunit, always disconnect and ground the spark plug wire.

Engines installed on power equipment are often manufactured this way. The engine manufacturers do this because they are unsure of the kind of equipment or how the engine will be mounted on various product.

During service, an owner/operator may locate more than on oil fill or drain location. Only one of these is needed for service. Generally the equipment manufacturer who installs the engine will identify the appropriate drain or fill location on the product itself, in the engine Operators Manual or in the product Operators Manual.

The engine itself will often have an extension pipe or tube over the appropriate drain or fill location making service easier from that location. Or, the engine may be mounted in such a way that allows easiest access from only one of these locations. Make sure that the equipment is level before servicing, then use the most appropriate fill or drain location to perform the necessary maintenance.
