VanguardT Engines Bring new Innovations to the Commercial Market

July 2nd, 2010:

Briggs & Stratton's Commercial Power Division was founded upon a straightforward principle: Work as hard as its hard-working customers. The same holds true today as the team works to build and strengthen the VanguardT brand, while expanding the commercial product line. "We are investing in building a unique and meaningful brand," says Commercial Power marketing Manager Dan Roche. Today, with expanding OEM and end-user acceptance, VanguardT is gaining a reputation of being tough rugged and reliable, and ready to work when called upon to perform. However, it's not just about words in the commercial market, it's about actions.

"We know the Vanguard brand resides within our customers' minds. but so do our future product ideas," explained Roche. The Commercial Power product Group is voice of customer driven. That's why they routinely reach out and listen to customer for product ideas and development. An example of this is the new Vanguard single-cylinder engines with the TransportGuardT System. "We dug deep to reach the un-met need of the customers," said Roche. The TransportGuard System - available on 5.5 gross HP and 10.0 gross HP Vanguard Single-Cylinder engines - helps solve a costly problem the small equipment industry had been tolerating for many years.

The problem with commercial engines, particularly in the rental industry, is that during transport, engines are subjected to vibration, which can cause fuel to flow through the engine and into the oil. Oil dilution is costly, wasteful and negatively impacts the performance of the engine and the business that counts on that engine to start up and run all day. The TransportGuardT System is designed to stop the fuel and oil from mixing. With a single flip of the red lever, operators simultaneously shut off the fuel when they shut off the engine. Due in part to this practical solution, the new VanguardT single cylinder engines with the TransportGuardT System received an award for most innovative product in the construction industry.

Similar voices of customer driven activities are underway on VanguardT V-Twins. The Vanguard 35 gross HP and 36 gross HP V-Twins offer a unique "Marine Package" that allows these engines to thrive in tough saltwater conditions. The marine package consists of: digital ignition, a lighter flywheel, stainless steel muffler, and a 20/50 amp alternator o power lights and depth finders. Other Vanguard V-Twin engines now feature the "Idle Down" feature. This feature is designed to reduce RPM and resulting noise and vibration when full power is not required on a pump or generator. These special features have opened up new business opportunities and have proven that Vangaurd engines are built to endure the toughest conditions and satisfy the most demanding users.

It's one thing to come up with new features; however, it's another to get noticed in the market place. Today's commercial customers are busier than ever, but the team has worked to ensure the Vanguard gets noticed where customers are researching tools to get the job done. Significant work has been done to reach and engage prospects online and at industry tradeshows.
