Diamonds In The Rough Celebrates Five Years

June 1st, 2008:

Diamonds in the Rough has returned for the fifth straight year! The 2008 program was expanded to include more winner and more prizes. And once again, former New York Yankee great Tino Martinz acted as the national spokesperson for Diamonds in the Rough.

Essay contestants told us how playing baseball has given them the Power Within to overcome a challenge. Twenty regional winners won $5,000 for their team's baseball field, as well as a Snapper lawnmower powered by Briggs & Stratton and a baseball-themed prize package. Of the twenty regional winners, the grand prizewinner is determined by an online vote. This year's winner, jack Berney, a 7-year-old from Suburban Cleveland won $10,000 for his team's baseball field and a trip for four to see a Yankees game in New York.

After breaking his arm, Berney was destined to a season on the sidelines of the Strongsville Tee Ball league. Instead of sulking, he enthusiastically attended all of his games to root on his teammates. In the final game of last season, Berney's coach, Dan Foust, brought him in to bat as a reward for his dedication. Berney responded by socking a one-handed triple that inspired his teammates and community alike.

Briggs & Stratton recognizes each of the Diamonds in the Rough winners with a recognition event where the local community and media come out to celebrate the winner's achievement. Since the inception of the program, Briggs & Stratton dealers have represented Briggs & Stratton Corporation by giving speeches, presenting awards and talking to the media at the regional recognition events.

"We feel this is a great opportunity for dealers to interact with their hometown community while promoting their business and the Briggs & Stratton brand," said Anita Fisher, Consumer Marketing Manager for Briggs & Stratton Corporation.

Through Diamonds in the Rough, Briggs & Stratton has donated over $400,000 to youth baseball programs across the nation. The high visibility that this program attains each year allows Briggs & Stratton to build awareness of its products in the local communities our dealers serve.
